But they have said they have reduced Google by 34% and still revenue has grown

The "reduced Google dependency by 34% while growing revenue" claim is management’s central talking point from early 2026 earnings calls. It sounds like Trivago cracked organic customer retention and broke free from search engine arbitrage, but inspecting the income statement and operating mechanics reveals how that stat works—and what it obscures.

1. Where Does the "Down 34%" Come From?

In the Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Johannes Thomas stated that Google-driven referral revenue had dropped by 34% compared to Q1 2023.

This was not Google users magically converting into direct users on their own. It was a deliberate reallocation of performance marketing capital:

  • Between 2018 and 2023, Trivago spent massive sums bidding on Google Search and Google Hotel Ads (GHA) to buy top-of-funnel clicks.
  • Because Google’s own auction dynamic squeezed Trivago’s margins (Google forced Trivago to pay more per click than Trivago could monetize from OTAs), management drastically cut their paid bidding budget on Google Search.
  • Cutting bids meant Trivago simply stopped buying marginal Google clicks, driving down Google-sourced revenue by 34%.

2. If Google Dropped 34%, Why Did Revenue Grow?

Total revenue grew 19% in 2025 to €548.9 million and continued with mid-teens to 20%+ growth into mid-2026. How did they grow while abandoning Google traffic?

They Swapped Paid Google Clicks for Massive Brand Spend

The traffic did not become "free" or genuinely organic. The money Trivago stopped giving to Google was funneled into above-the-line brand campaigns—primarily heavy television, connected TV, and high-profile ambassador partnerships (such as the multi-market Jürgen Klopp campaign launched in 2024–2025 across 30+ markets).

When you spend hundreds of millions on TV and YouTube pre-roll ads:

  • Consumers see the ad, open an app store or type "trivago.com" directly into a browser, which management reports as "Branded Channel Traffic".
  • Total advertising spend surged right alongside revenue: In 2025, advertising spend jumped 21% to €418.2 million.
  • Advertising spend was 76.2% of total revenue.
  • They are still burning roughly €0.76 of every single revenue dollar just to buy travelers, but the checks are written to TV networks and digital video instead of Google Ads.

Product Conversion & Marketplace Mix Uplifts

Management reported that on-site booking conversion improved by ~37% from 2023 to 2026, driven by a redesigned UI, logged-in member features, and the scaling of "Book & Go" (their white-labeled booking engine). Higher conversion rates allow them to extract more revenue per visitor session, temporarily lifting top-line numbers without needing raw Google search volume.

3. The Structural Reality: Revenue Grew, but Cash Flow Remains Thin

If reducing Google dependency had created a genuine, defensible brand moat, operating margins would have surged. When a marketplace transitions from paid performance acquisition to organic brand loyalty, gross margins drop straight to Adjusted EBITDA and Net Income.

That is not what the numbers show:

Metric2017 (Peak Google / TV Arbitrage)2024 (Post-COVID Trough)2025 ("Turnaround" Year)2026 (Guidance Run-Rate)
Total Revenue€1,035.4M€460.8M€548.9M~€630M–€650M
Advertising Spend€888M (85.8%)€345M (74.9%)€418.2M (76.2%)~€470M–€490M
Adjusted EBITDA€6.7M€10.2M€15.8M~€30.0M
Adjusted EBITDA Margin0.6%2.2%2.9%~4.7%
Net Income(€13.0M)(€23.7M)€11.2M*~€15M–€20M

*Note: 2025 net income was heavily assisted by an €8.8M one-off release of an uncertain tax provision; underlying operating income was only €1.5M.

What to Watch Going Forward

Trivago has demonstrated they can replace expensive Google Search clicks with expensive TV and branded video campaigns. That is an operational achievement in channel diversification, but it does not solve the core economic problem of metasearch.

The acid test for management's "flywheel" will come when they attempt to hit their stated target of a 10% Adjusted EBITDA margin by 2028. To reach a 10% margin, ad spend as a percentage of revenue must fall from ~76% down toward ~65%.

Every time in Trivago's 10-year history that management has dialed back marketing spend to capture that promised margin, the "branded" direct traffic has degraded rapidly. Until Trivago can throttle its €400M+ ad budget without revenue contracting, the "34% reduction in Google" remains a channel rotation rather than a permanent moat.
